A two-year study out of the University of Liège just broke one of the oldest assumptions in near-death research. Neuroscientist Charlotte Marshall's team wired 180 ICU patients with EEG equipment and captured twelve near-death experiences happening in real time, not reconstructed afterward from memory. The brains of those patients weren't shutting down; they showed more neural complexity than a normal, awake brain does.
