Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is now more than 24 billion kilometers from Earth — the most distant human-made object in existence. It's running critically low on power. NASA engineers just powered down one of its science instruments to keep the rest functioning. They had to decide which parts of a 49-year-old machine got to keep existing out in interstellar space, where a signal takes more than 22 hours each way. It is still transmitting. It is still being listened to. One instrument fewer than it had last week.
