Since the 1960s, SETI has concentrated almost entirely on a narrow slice of the radio spectrum called the "water hole" — frequencies between 1.42 and 1.66 GHz. The reasoning: hydrogen and hydroxyl together form water, water is central to life, so an advanced civilization would logically broadcast there. That assumption has never really been tested. A new study out of the University of Manchester used the ALMA telescope's archived observations to run the first-ever SETI search at millimeter and submillimeter frequencies — a part of the spectrum almost completely unexplored by alien-hunting researchers. No signals were found. But the point isn't the result — it's the realization that for decades, the entire search has been based on a very human assumption about what aliens would choose to do.
