On June 4th, NASA announced that the James Webb Space Telescope detected methane on interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS — the first time methane has ever been found on any object from outside our solar system. JWST also measured exceptionally high carbon dioxide levels, far beyond anything seen in comets born around our own star. The methane was buried beneath the surface and only emerged as solar heating peeled back the outer layers. Scientists believe 3I/ATLAS formed in a planetary system with fundamentally different chemical conditions than our Sun. Colder. Stranger. Built from different material. It is now past Jupiter on its way out of our solar system permanently, and it is not coming back.
