On April 29th, the FBI and the US Attorney for Massachusetts formally concluded their investigation into the December 2025 killing of MIT plasma physicist Nuno Loureiro. After 260+ interviews and five months of investigation: the conclusion was that the perpetrator acted entirely alone, no nexus to terrorism, motivated by personal grievance dating back to a Portuguese university classroom three decades ago. The Director of MIT's Fusion Research Center wasn't targeted because of what he knew about classified programs. He was targeted because of who he went to school with. That closure matters in two directions — it removes one case from the pattern, and it does nothing to explain the rest of the cases that are still unexplained.
