They Found This 2,000-Year-Old Pit and Can't Explain It - IRH 296

Archaeologists expanding a quarry near Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands uncovered an oval stone-lined pit about ten feet long, with expertly fitted walls, a clay slab floor, and steps leading down inside — no mortar holding any of it together. Local press nicknamed it the "Iron Age hot tub." Inside: the skeleton of a woman with unusual dental wear, animal bones, burnt material, and half a soapstone bowl. The lead archaeologist says flatly the structure wasn't originally built as a grave — she was placed there after it was already built, for a purpose nobody's figured out yet.
