On June 22nd, Trump signed two executive orders with the presidents of Google and IBM standing behind him. The first directs the government to build a quantum computer capable of genuine scientific research and deliver it to a Department of Energy facility by 2028. The second sets hard deadlines to harden every sensitive federal system against the kind of attacks a working quantum computer could launch — key systems by 2030, high-impact environments by 2031. The White House framing was explicit: this is a race with China, and the US intends to win it. That part is accurate. But the mainstream coverage completely missed what quantum computers at this scale actually need to run — and where the only real supply of it is sitting right now.
