Chad Lewis was in Central America searching for the Tata Duende — a tiny forest protector with a machete, a sombrero, and no thumbs. Tuck yours in or he'll rip them off. But the locals also told him about their version of La Llorona: not a weeping woman on a riverbank, but a beautiful woman who lures men into the woods at night, then transforms into a giant snake-like creature and devours them. The only way to investigate was a midnight canoe tour through crocodile-infested floodwaters, wading thigh-deep into the river in the dark with a headlamp. Chad made it. La Llorona didn't show. He says it's still one of the most terrifying things he's ever done — because the real dangers and the supernatural ones were equally present.
