Two Mars discoveries dropped this week that change how we think about the red planet. First, researchers confirmed that Martian rocks contain gemstones — rubies and possibly sapphires — created by ancient meteorite impacts and hydrothermal activity. Second, data from NASA's InSight mission suggests the Tharsis volcanic region is more geologically active than previously thought and may actually be causing the entire planet to spin faster over time.
Mars has active geology. Mars has gemstones. And if Mars had active geology billions of years ago, it also had liquid water — which makes the panspermia question a whole lot more interesting.
