165. Bigfoot: Fouke Monster 2, Sightings

The timeline you put into this tangent creating on the street 1985 alternate tube near Einstein. Welcome back to the Infinite Rabbit Hole, everybody. I'm your host, Jeremy, and today we're going to dive right back into the FALC monster, and we're going to jump into some of my favorite sightings and encounters that I found while doing research into the subject. There's a lot here.

0:52 OK, There is a lot. Just to be clear, we're not going to be covering any of the reports from part one, so everything in this one is going to be brand new to you today. And I also did my best to stay away from the typical quote a Bigfoot cross the road report, but I did add a few that seemed to be important. The sources for these particular encounters I got from Lyle Blackburn's books Boggy Creek, Case Files and The Beast of Boggy Creek, The True Story, The Falk Monster, Smokey Crabtree's Book, Smokey and the Falcon Monster, The Bigfoot Researcher Organization or bfro.net, the website of the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization, BC pro.com, and publications referring to the articles from the Texas Bigfoot Research Center.

The early encounters Most people who have ever heard of the Falk monster are made aware of the creature by way of the 1972 cinematic docudrama The Legend of Baki Creek, which, although never truly mentions the time frame of the reports it was dramatizing, is believed to have encounters primarily from the late 1960s to the 1970s.

3:59 This would leave most who discovered the Falk monster to believe that the creature burst onto the scene as a sudden and new threat in that time frame. But the truth is that this monstrosity has been around far longer. An encounter by Willie Smith's sister in 1908 that I very briefly mentioned in the previous episode is just one example. And if you open the search requirements to include reports of quote UN quote, wild men, the results not only grow exponentially, but they go way further back in time as well. Unfortunately for us, there are not a ton of properly detailed reports prior to the 1900s, primarily due to the nature of the time when it came to documenting such encounters, but we do have plenty of others once the first newspapers in the area began popping onto the scene.

4:44 Turns out that there are no solid details on Willie Smith's sister's encounter with a creature other than the locals all being well versed in the fact that she had an encounter in 1908. But Blackburn does end up noting that his sister was a woman by the name of Kate Savelle, then in 19/16/19 miles West of Falk near Wright Pat Man Lake in Texas. Side note, one of the rivers that lead into the lake is none other than the Sulphur River, which Boggy Creek stands as a tributary to. An encounter is documented involving an older couple coming home by mule drawn carriage one night when the animals that were pulling them began to act erratically as they approached their property. The man who originally thought that it may be a snake in the road peered over to see if he was correct when a howl broke out near one of his pastures.

5:35 Soon after, a tall, upright, walking dark figure walked out of the tree line and began heading in their direction, all while continuing to make a strange howling sound. The man reached for his rifle before firing on the creature. The shot missed, but the sound of the report was enough to scare whatever it was off. They would go on to describe the creature as taller than a man with a slouch like an ape. Blackburn included another account from a creature from 1932 in the area that he had received through conversation with a Falk local by the name of John Attaway. The encounter involved Attaway's personal friend by the name of Ace Coker, who was living with his sister at the time. One day, as Coker was opening the door to enter the house, he spotted a very large, hairy, upright creature right next to the porch. Surprised as he must have walked right by it, Coker quickly ran inside and locked the door behind him. Then he took a peek outside to get a better look. The thing was already almost out of the yard. In the October 5th, 1910 edition of the Texarkanic Gazette, an article was published detailing an unknown animal making strange sounds and killing pigs in the area north of Texarkana. The whole article, word for word states quote wild beast at large A strange beast which roars like a lion is reported to be running at large in the woods near Spring Lake Park near Texarkana. The animal is said to have killed several pigs on the McAllister Place and several large dogs near Newtown. The roars of the strange beast

7:07 have so frightened the people that they are afraid to leave their homes after dark, and windows and doors are kept securely barred. In 1946, a woman reported the sheriff, Leslie Greer, who was campaigning to be the local tax assessor at the time, that there was a large animal that had walked on two legs down to the field below her house. She described it as looking like it was a man, but it wasn't a man during the transition of the creature's moniker, which was caused by the Famous Four article by the Texarkana Gazette due to them not being aware of the then called Jonesville monster. There were a few noticeable encounters that I left out of part One from the rest of the 1960s, including a report in Chapter 15 of Smokey Crabtree's book Smokey and the FALC Monster, where in 1966 a FALC school bus driver who is beginning her route early in the morning when she spotted the creature crossing the road a few 100 feet in front of her. A few other encounters involving the Jonesville monster were eventually recorded.

8:06 Most involved the hunter in the woods coming across something that they couldn't explain, but one person's encounter stands out among the rest. Louise Harvin had two encounters with the creature. The first took place as she was going out to check on her pigs when she startled the thing as it was eating scraps out of the through. Once it noticed Louise had stood up and ran away, she would go on to describe the animal as having long, reddish brown hair, a large, flat nose, and a darker skin tone on its face than the color of hair that covered its entire body. Her second encounter involved her leaving her house, only to witness the thing licking an old hubcap that she used as a dog food bowl just outside of her front door.

8:47 Again, once it realized it wasn't alone, it ran off on two legs. During this encounter, she was able to notice that the creature had a set of large canines that reminded her of ones that she had seen on baboons, but the face looked more like that of a gorilla's. A few other reports were documented in Smokey Crabtree's book Smokey and the Falcon Monster, including one from the mid to late 1960s that described his father's string of encounters in which the creature would come up to the house and scream, basically scaring the shit out of the entire house. This pattern went on for quite a while and eventually evolved into scaring their dogs away from the property. When the dogs returned, the creature would come back and do it again. Another report that I wish we had more details on was one that Lyle Blackburn described in his book Boffy Creek Casebook, which highlighted a hunter in the mid late 1960s that was out in Mercer Bayou when he spotted the creature. The unnamed hunter attempted to approach the animal, but unfortunately it retreated as it noticed the man coming towards him.

9:48 In November 1968 in the Sulphur River management area West of Falk. A man and his son had just retrieved their boat out of the Sulphur River and began eating lunch in front of their truck before heading home when they spotted a large, approximately 8 foot tall upright man like being crossing the road about 200 yards away. They watched as the Auburn hair colored Something crossed the road in only three steps, which it seemed to be carrying something near its stomach. The road in the area was just over 25 feet wide, and in order to clear such a distance, the thing stride would have to have been over 8 feet long. With the average human having 5 foot strides. This creature was certainly unlike any human. And finally, in December of 1969, John Copeland and his family slowed their car down and ordered to lend a lift to who they thought was a man in a long foot coat.

10:38 But as they approached, John began to think differently as whatever it was lifted its arm to block its eyes from the headlights. This was no man, as the beast stood much taller than any man John knew. It was completely covered in brown hair and had what looked like caked on mud attached to its body from its feet to about mid thigh. And John quickly changed his mind and speed off for fear of his family's safety. The 70s On June 2nd, 1971, Gloria Dean Ritchie, Jerry Smallwood and Junior Goodman witnessed the creature squatting on the embankment across the street of Gloria's house near Texarkana. The group heard a commotion across the street which set off Gloria's dog, so she shined a flashlight to see what was moving around.

11:23 After the light shone on the creature, it stood up and ran into the dense woods behind where it was standing. Miss Ritchie would go on to describe the creature as, quote real tall and hairy and had real red eyes. Junior and Jerry attempted to track the animal through the woods after retrieving more flashlights and guns, but unfortunately were unable to track down after attempting to follow its trail. The incident occurred about 10 miles north from where the Fords had their run in with the creature, but when the officials showed up to investigate the incident, they found no evidence other than a trail through the woods and three terrified people. On an unknown day in late June, another peculiar sighting would be reported in a strange way to a few locals in town.

12:04 Two men approached a few others and asked about what animals were seen locally. The locals instantly believed that the two men were trying to make a joke about recent sightings, but rather when they were told about the currently ongoing flapper run insurance, the men were completely caught off guard. The two men were from Kansas, which was confirmed by their license plate, and they were driving through just a few miles South of town when they both spotted a large, hairy, upright creature standing on the side of the road. Curious as to what it could be, the men pulled over to see if someone could explain it as a commonly found animal in the area and claimed to have absolutely no previous knowledge of the issue the town was having with the beast. There were many sightings in the area around this time, so much that there were plenty of reports made to the Sheriff's Office that never made it to the media. One in particular was that of Deputy Sheriff Robinson, who almost hit the creature with his cruiser while on patrol. Sometime in 1970, a local farmer described an encounter with Charles Pierce, producer of the movie Legend of Baggy Creek, in which he surprisingly ran into the beast when he approached his barn to milk his cows.

13:08 The man and creature stood and stared at each other before whatever it was eventually turned around and walked away through the man's pasture. He went on to describe the creature as having really long, shaggy hair that dropped off of its arms. In a personal interview with author Lyle Blackburn, a man by the name of Butch Hamilton recalled the day in the fall of 1971 when he and his mother and father had arrived at the local boat ramp in Mercer Bayou, where he and his mother began a relay of calls back and forward with something in the woods. As his father unloaded the boat into the water, whatever it was that was calling back to them sounded closer and closer every time it replied, until eventually it revealed itself in the tree line across the street.

13:50 Butch remembered it being enormous, with reddish brown hair covering its entire body. The creature caused quite the ruckus as two other men gathered to witness the animal as it began walking over a fallen tree. Butch's mother told him to get in the truck, where they watched as the men retrieved their shotguns from their camper and began approaching the beast just before things got really heated. Butch's father, who was completely unaware of the situation at the time, started up the motor of the boat, which caused the creature to turn and run into the woods and disappeared. In the early summer of 1973, teenage girls Reba Jones and Karen Crabtree were riding in the back of a pickup truck on an old country Rd. In Jonesville when the girls witnessed an extremely tall, brown haired, covered creature across the road after they passed. Karen described being most impressed by its really long arms.

14:40 In 1973, when Mona Jackson was still a child, she recalled the sightings she had when she was riding her bike on a sectional Rd. next to an old pipeline clearing. She noticed a dark figure traversing the clearing on 2 legs before she frantically peddled away as fast as she could. She would admit in her adult years that at the time she was well aware of the Falk Monster and all of its stories, and explained that it was because of her knowledge of the beast that she had took off so fast. In 1974, William Richmond and his brother were heading out squirrel hunting in an area South of Falk known as Valley Gin. When they pulled up on the side of the road, the men instantly heard the chatter of squirrels in the tree line. William responded by telling his little brother to go ahead without him as he finished his cigarette, but before the younger man was able to take a few steps towards the tree line, the area erupted in a valley of hoots, screams, grunts, and footfalls that instantly made the two men peer out into the forest.

15:34 William and his brother agreed that this was probably not the best time for this and decided to head back. But before they could put their planned motion, the source of the ruckus charged at them from the trees and stopped about 30 three feet away, screaming at the top of its lunge. William and his brother were shocked and petrified at what they were looking at. It was about 7 feet tall, 4 feet wide, covered in hair and pure muscle. The men began shooting their small guns that they knew would do nothing in hopes that it would at least scare it off. Luckily, it did, because if it hadn't, William may not have lived to tell his encounter in an interview with Lyle Blackburn, and sometime in the late 1970s, a man by the name a crocky Pilgrim noticed something hunched down by the pond in his backyard. As he cleaned the dishes in his kitchen, he watched as whatever it was stood up on two legs and poured water from the pond into its mouth from its hands before walking away on the two legs like a man.

16:29 The 80s. The Texas Bigfoot Research Center published a report from sometime in the 1980s by a man named Harry Elrod who was going out to the Mercer Bayou to retrieve his trot lines when he had a run in with the beast that scared the life right out of him. Elrod was picking up line by line to his annoyance of no fish on any of them up until the one that seemed to be snagged on something under the water as he reached back to unclip his knife to cut the line free. A large, hairy beast bursted out of the water holding his line, effectively scaring him to the point that he jumped out of his boat once near the shallow water and ran out of the woods to a nearby house where he was able to call the Sheriff's Department to come out and investigate a story. Unfortunately, there was nothing ever found to verify his report. In November of 1984, a local hunter and Falk encountered the creature walking in the water of Sulphur Creek Wildlife Management Area up to its waist.

17:27 Soon after he noticed a creature. The creature then noticed him and walked off into the thicket and out of sight. The hunter followed the beast in hopes of being the one to bag the monster that was so famous in the area. After searching for a little bit, he once again laid eyes on it and raised his gun to take the shot, but the beast took off and was never seen again. But now the hunter was all alone in the area of the management area that he was unfamiliar with, with an eerie feeling of being watched from multiple angles. So we slowly hiked out of the trees before heading home for the day. On February 20th, 1982, a young man by the name of Terry Sutton was fishing from a small boat on his family's pond in Jonesville when he spotted the creature on the shore. He watched as whatever it was seemed to not notice that he was around.

18:12 It casually worked its way through the immediate area before disappearing down a ravine towards a Creek on the property. Terrified, Terry paddled over to the shore where he originally entered the pond, and during his own ruckus he heard whatever it was begin running through the leaves. This scared Terry and he took off as fast as he could back to his parents house. There he told his mother what he had seen and she placed a call to Terry's father, Lloyd's Sutton, who promptly came home. Terry, visually terrified in his father's eyes, told his father that he had seen the Falk monster through his tears. Lloyd grabbed the pistol and two flashlights and gave one the lights and the pistol to his nervous son before they headed back out towards the area of the pond that he came from.

18:54 For the most part they found nothing but the God awful smell of something that neither of them have ever smelled before in the general area where Terry believed it was when it responded by running away to this noise When he came ashore very soon after, just out of the reach of their flashlights, something large ran across their path. Both of the Suttons began to chase, and every time they stopped they could hear whatever it was nearby walking or running through the leaf litter. Two other noticeable encounters took place in the 80s, one again in 1982 when Jerry Wayne Scogans witnessed the creatures splash around in the waterway of the Sulphur River Bottoms before exiting onto the shore and walking away into the trees. The other occurred in 1987 when James Jones and his wife were spending some time on the water near dark when they spotted two eyes watching them thanks to the reflection of the light that they were giving off.

19:44 Whatever it was seemed to follow them, and when they could see the silhouette of whatever it may have been, they noticed that it was not only huge, but it walked on two legs. The rest of the 80s proved to be quite slow in regard to sightings of the Falk monster. It's not completely clear whether or not it was due to the lack of actual sightings or if the Median Sheriff's Office was over the entire subject, but with the expansion of the Internet in the 90s, the once popular subject of Falk monster sightings came roaring back. The 90s and 2000s In 1995 men were travelling by car on their way to Shreveport when the silhouette of a large hair covered manly figure was illuminated by a tractor trailer travelling on the northbound side of US 71.

20:30 The creature made its way across the highway in front of both cars as they both slammed on the brakes to watch it finish crossing the road and enter into the field on the other side. The two parties of six men discussed their sighting in which they all believed was not a bear. Two of the men that were travelling in the car came out years later and mentioned that at the time they had never heard of the monster from Falca, Arkansas. But this encounter alone stands as one of the best pieces of evidence of a more modern Falca monster. Another event highlighted from the Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization, or GCBRO, details a couple from the area of Jonesville who were waiting on the second story of their home from the local hog pack to come buy their property.

21:11 As the hog showed up, the husband raised his rifle to shoot one when a painful scream rang out from the area just off the tree line of their property. Whatever was happening, something was dying. The next morning they went out to see if they could find any evidence of what happened, but all they found was a ton of fresh blood all over the area, no sign of the hog who was being attacked and no sign of the attacker. This event is highlighted due to the couple having a history on the property, which includes one other encounter with a Bigfoot which ended with the husband guiding his wife into the house from a car due to him spotting the creature in the tree line of their property, seemingly watching her in the driveway. In the summer of 1996, Alex Burgess, who was only a child at the time, was playing in the family yard with his sister, the creature walking perpendicular just a few feet into the tree line of their property.

22:02 The Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization notes an encounter from July 11th, 1998, when a young woman who was babysitting her sister's children noticed a large hairy being standing just a few feet behind the tree line, watching her and the children. As the kids played in a freshly cleared area with a few trees on the ground leftover from the cleanup, she never mentioned the creature watching them from the woods to any of the children. Instead, she created the diversion and got the children and herself out of the area immediately without taking her eyes off the peeping beast. An encounter that Blackburn reported on from the Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy, or TBRC, outlines an experience which left a hunter in January of 2000 terrified and hesitant to share his encounter.

22:46 The witness and a few of his buddies were Coon hunting sometime after midnight near Mercer Bayou when one of his hounds alerted them that they had a raccoon treat. Following his dog's lead he started trekking across the shallow, mucky brackish water when he heard the sound of someone also walking through the same stuff just out of his sight. He called out as he believed as one of his friends but never got a response. The only thing he noticed was a God awful smell and that his other dogs that were following him had their tails tucked and seemed extremely scared. As he continued walking he noticed the sound of whatever it was moving in the water again and turned around and realized that about 30 feet behind him stood A towering upright hair covered monster.

23:30 This thing was huge, and it was making a sort of hissing sound at him while splashing its enormous hands in the water in an attempt to get him wet. The witness's dogs began barking, snapping their teeth at the behemoth, only for the experiencer to grab hold tight of their leashes and take off running into the woods as fast as he could. The man hid behind a tree and listened as whatever it was remained in hot pursuit. Eventually the beast gave up and Lombard off, audibly disgruntled. Another encounter was detailed on an episode of the show Monster Quest, involving a young man by the name with Stacey Hudson, who was hunting in a stand when he noticed a few different large black animals that he originally thought were cows moving through the area. As he tried to focus in on the subjects, he watched out of the corner of his vision, a large black hand reached up and grabbed the broad head of the arrow in his bow. The owner of the hand was cut by the razor sharp edge of the broad head and let out a horrific scream just under Stacey, which gave him the scare of his life as he did not hear anything making its way up the ladder to his tree stand. Hudson let out a loud yelling response and the creature fell to the ground and ran away.

24:40 Stacey claims that he stayed in his tree stand scared out of his mind until well after sunrise before he headed back to his truck. In September of 2011, Heather Owen was heading home from a friend's house in Falk when she spotted a creature hunched over on the side of the road. As the headlights met the beast, it stood up and ran in front of her car before leaping completely over a runoff ditch on the other side of the road and stepped over a slightly obscured barbed wire fence. About an hour before she left her friend's house. The family dog was barking non-stop at something unknown, and seeing that Heather's encountered, happened just a short distance away from her friend's house. She believed that the dog may have been trying to alert the family that this creature was out there. In January 2013, Doyle Holmes was gathering firewood for a camping trip with his wife on the shores of Carter Lake when he began to hear a strange cry coming from the nearby field. When he approached, he noticed what looked to be a juvenile Sasquatch standing in the middle of the field, completely unobstructed.

25:40 Making an almost saddening cry, the creature stood approximately 4 feet tall with dark colored hair. When it became aware of Doyle, it took off running towards a murky waterway in the area before Doyle lost sight of it. He then quickly ran back to camp, drove home, grabbed his canoe and returned to try and track it back down. It took a long time, but when the sun went down the soft moaning cry began again, only this time when the sound started, so did the sound of movement from something much bigger making its way through the water towards the sound that he was trying to find. Soon after, a set of very large whoops rang through the area and Doyle became terrified that he was near something so big. And finally on December 7th 2019, Dustin Clark and friends were out scouting an area of the woods by Mercer Bayou at night when he noticed movement ahead.

26:30 The crew followed the creature for as long as they could before they lost track of it. Clark then promptly made a call to a friend named Stephen who had a pair of night vision goggles. Stephen quickly made it out to where the group was and the search continued from a stationary position until they were able to find where it had gone. The group had almost given up when one of them took the goggles and searched in the area of a nearby gully and successfully tracked it back down. The group was stunned and all witnesses noted that it was huge and seemed to be aware of them as it looked to be hiding behind a thick tree looking in their direction. Clark even noted that he was able to see the white eye shine that illuminated through the view of the night vision goggles.

27:12 After a few minutes of watching Ferd's next move, the group decided to try and get a little bit closer, but as they approached it ran away and the team was unable to re spot it. Well that's it everybody. That's the quick overview I have of some of the more impressive sightings of this creature. Now there are hundreds, I mean, shoot, there may even be into the thousands of smaller reports, mainly those a Bigfoot cross the road reports or I heard something a lot of footprints, a lot of sounds. There's a lot.

27:52 That's all I can really say. There's a lot. It's honestly really impressive how much there is of the Falk monster. And and it was because of this that I chose to research the Falk monster as the start of our local Bigfoot Legends series, if you will. It's not going to be an official series, but definitely going to be bringing a lot more local Bigfoot Legends to the table soon. So be ready for that. That's pretty much it.
